Hi Everyone,

It's Spring yeaaah! I wanted to touch base and ask you for your support if you would like?

Since 2009 I have been climbing the CN Tower stairs in the Spring (April 16/11) and the Fall (date unknown yet) for a good cause. The causes are either for animal rights or environmental/social change. This Spring I'm climbing for climate change.

Every other day I train outdoors on public stairs because I can't afford or like going to fitness clubs. Currently I'm hopping the fence at the outdoor stadium next to the Kitchener Auditorium. The stadium there has a vertical climb of 58 steps. So I run up and down them 31 times as fast as I can to condition my body to climb the CN Towers 1,776 steps/144 flights of stairs. On non climbing days I do basic strength exercises like push ups, abs, squats, lunges/deadlifts for my hamstrings and lots of stretching!

My CN Tower best time up is 14min 51sec. This Spring my goal is to break 14 minutes. It's hard work but I'm going to try my butt off to challenge my goal.

Hey George

Thank you for the wonderful work you did clearing my basement of all the concrete left by my plumbing job.

Had the plumber taken it away, it would have cost me quite a lot more at plumber rates, so he suggested I try to get rid of it through other means.

I have called my plumber and told him what a great job you did and the great rate. He also felt I got a good rate and said he will definitely recommend you if any of his clients need help with their clean ups.

Recycling Blue Box Turns 30 Years Old!/ Source Kitchener Record Newspaper

WATERLOO REGION — It's a fixture at curb sides around the world.

But did you know that the ubiquitous blue box can trace its roots to Kitchener?

The little bin's paternity is actually up for debate — there are at least three people who have been dubbed Father of the Blue Box.

Nyle Ludolph is one of them.

Thirty years ago, the Kitchener man was instrumental in getting the first municipal blue box recycling program off the ground.

Ludolph was working for Laidlaw Waste Systems at the time, which had the contract to collect Kitchener's trash. A few years earlier, he'd been asked to speak at a local high school on the need to recycle and reduce waste.

"Up until that time, waste management meant collecting the waste and bulldozing it," Ludolph said. Recycling really wasn't their mandate.

He left the high school shaking his head. "You're such a hypocrite," he told himself.

That night, Ludolph dug a compost heap in his backyard and embarked on a conscious effort to reduce his family's waste. It worked.

Over the course of a year, he only put garbage out half a dozen times. He submitted his findings to his boss — who was convinced they'd all be out of a job if the public caught on.

No, Ludolph said. They should implement a recycling program, as part of their business.

Working with Resource Integration Systems, Laidlaw launched a voluntary pilot program in 1981 in the Kitchener Auditorium neighbourhood, involving 1,000 homes. Only some of the homes received a blue plastic box to put their items in — newsprint, other paper, glass and tin cans. The boxes were emblazoned with the slogan We Recycle.

"We knew we had to have the container to make it work," Ludolph said. "We knew within six months that this was something good."

In 1983, the program was rolled out to 35,000 homes in Kitchener — every home that had residential garbage collection.

A few years later, Mississauga adopted the program, and the blue box concept was on a roll. Ludolph was one of its biggest champions across Ontario.

"It was all about tree-hugging and stream-tasting," said Ludolph, now 83. "You want to do something about the environment? You can do it with a blue box."

"Now, even a two-year-old child understands what the blue box is for," said Kathleen Barsoum, promotion and education coordinator for Waterloo Region's waste management division. Last year, the region collected 36,230 tonnes of recyclable materials.

But people can do something before items even hit the blue box, Barsoum said. Reduce what you use. Reuse what you can.

Recycling is costly — it always has been, and it likely always will be. Sales of recycled materials recovered about half of blue box operating costs in 2010.

There are other things to consider, though. We only have one landfill site in the region, and it will be full in about 20 years. Land filling is costly, too. "We don't recoup any costs from garbage," Barsoum said.

The green bin program for organics stands to divert the most waste from landfill. The region is even considering an outright ban on organics in the landfill by late 2012.

If he's being honest, Ludolph would rather see people use a backyard composter than the green bins. "There's no cost to it," he said. "But you just can't get people to backyard compost."

The blue box turns 30 this year. Ludolph couldn't be a prouder papa. The little box that he and a few others nurtured has spread its wings to towns and cities across Canada and beyond.

"I think he was a visionary before his time," Barsoum said.
